Lakhimpur Kheri: Priyanka Gandhi released; UP govt allows her, Rahul to visit violence-hit district

Lucknow: Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi who was detained on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri, was released on Wednesday.

Priyanka had been detained in Sitapur 2nd PAC batallion, from where she was released.

The Uttar Pradesh government gave permission to Priyanka, Rahul Gandhi and three others to visit Lakhimpur Kheri.

ADG (Law and order) Prashant Kumar said the state government has now permitted people in groups of five to visit the district. “The state government imposed restrictions to maintain law and order, not to restrict any movement,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi, Chhatisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel and Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi reached Lucknow airport on Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, during a press conference at AICC headquarters in New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi had said that farmers were being systematically attacked and that now there was only dictatorship in the country.

 

Ajay Mishra meets Home minister Amit Shah

Union MoS Ajay Mishra, whose son Ashish has been accused of mowing down farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri, met Union Home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday.

After the incident, there has been a demand for Ajay Mishra’s resignation and Ashish’s arrest.
