Lakhimpur Kheri: FIR registered against Union minister’s son; deceased’s kin to get Rs 45 lakh each


Lucknow: A day after the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh that left four farmers dead, an FIR has been registered against Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra, according to available reports.

The government has announced Rs 45 lakh and a government job to a family member of the four farmers who died in Lakhimpur Kheri, said ADG (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar. He added that a retired judge woudl probe the matter.

Violence broke out in Lakhimpur Kheri district on Sunday afternoon after a jeep ran over farmers who were part of a protest against the Centre’s three farm laws.

Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait had said they were returning after a protest. At that time, a jeep ran over a few of them.

The group claimed Ashish Mishra was behind the act and demanded action against him and minister Ajay Mishra.

As per some reports, the farmers were upset over Ajay Mishra’s remarks that the protest against the farm laws was just by 10-15 people and it would take two minutes to make them fall in line. They had planned to gherao the helipad where he was scheduled to arrive. According to farmer leaders, when they were returning, a car mowed down farmers. They alleged Ashish was in the car, an allegation that Ajay Mishra had denied.

In wake of the violence, mobile internet services had been suspended in Lakhimpur Kheri.


Opposition parties protest

Following the incident, Opposition leaders started demanding Ajay Mishra’s resignation. Earlier in the day, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav was detained after he sat on a dharna outside his house when police stopped him from going to Lakhimpur Khera. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi was detained in Hargoan when she was on her way to the spot.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will hold a candle march at Jantar Mantar at 5 pm on Monday to protest the incident.

In Punjab, Congress leaders including Navjyot Singh Sidhu, will protest outside Governor House, demanding Ashish Mishra’s arrest as well as against the illegal detention of Priyanka Gandhi.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up outside UP Bhawan in Delhi after the All India Students Association called for a protest.
