New Delhi: A delegation of Congress leaders, led by party MP Rahul Gandhi, reached Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday to meet President Ram Nath Kovind over the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
A jeep, allegedly driven by MoS Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra had mowed down four farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh on October 3. A journalist, too, was killed in the incident.
An FIR has been registered in the case, naming Ashish Mishra for murder Around 15 others have been named in the FIR.
Opposition parties, including Congress, have been demanding that Ajay Mishra be dismissed as minister.
After the meeting, Rahul Gandhi said they had asked for removal of the accused’s father from the post of MoS Home “as a fair probe is not possible in his presence”. They also demanded inquiry by two sitting judges of Supreme Court
“A delegation of the Indian National Congress leaders comprising Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, Shri A.K. Antony, Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, Shri Rahul Gandhi and Smt Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called on President Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan,” read the tweet from the official handle of the President of India.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi was among the first to set out for Lakhimpur Kheri after the incident, but was detained for several hours.
Later, the Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognizance of the matter and asked the UP government to file a status report on action taken in the case.
Ashish Mishra is currently in police custody. He was taken to Lakhimpur Kheri Crime Branch office on Tuesday for questioning.
