The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has handed over the case of India cricketer Krunal Pandya to the airport Customs. Notably, Krunal Pandya was intercepted by DRI officials at the Mumbai International Airport on Thursday upon his arrival from UAE on the suspicion that he is carrying undisclosed gold and other valuables.
The DRI said that the cricketer was stopped for questioning and luxury watches were found. The case is small for DRI standard and a non-recurring type was handed over to the airport Customs as per normal practice, the agency said.
Notably, Krunal Pandya was found possessing gold items and luxury watches, including those gifted to him by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), upon checking. He had arrived in Mumbai in a chartered Indigo flight from UAE after taking part in IPL 2020.
Both the Pandya brothers are said to be fond of luxury watches. In fact, Krunal and his brother Hardik Pandya have often flaunted their watches on Instagram.
Indian government allows all male passengers coming back to India from Dubai, or other places, to bring gold jewellery up to 20 grams and not costing more than Rs 50,000 as a duty-free allowance. A female, on the other hand, is allowed to bring gold up to 40 grams, whose value must not exceed Rs 1 lakh. However, Krunal’s purchases were way beyond the permissible limit.
Krunal Pandya was returning from UAE
Krunal Pandya was returning from the UAE after taking part in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. Krunal plays for Mumbai Indians, which was led by Rohit Sharma.
In fact, the Mumbai Indian won this year’s tournament after defeating Shreyas Iyer’s Delhi Capitals. With the victory, Mumbai Indians became the only team to win five IPL titles.
Krunal Pandya failed to perform in IPL 2020
The all-rounder after playing the IPL final was returning to Mumbai, where he was stopped by the DRI. The left-handed batsman, who is also the brother of cricketer Hardik Pandya, did not have any good performance worth remembering in the IPL. He had played 16 matches in IPL 2020 and scored a total of 109 runs.
The March 1991 born cricketer also did not shine in the bowling department. He had 301 deliveries in the IPL 2020 and could get only six wickets for his team. Notably, he had bowled 301 deliveries and gave 380 runs at an economy of 7.57.
Krunal Pandya’s IPL career
As far as Krunal Pandya’s total IPL career is concerned, he has played 71 matches since debuting in 2016. He has a total score of 1,000 runs at an average of 25 and has a strike rate of 142.45. He has scored only one half-century and his highest score is 86. He has 95 boundaries and 40 sixes to his credit.
Similarly, Krunal Pandya has bowled 1,245 deliveries and given 1,509 runs. He has so far taken 46 wickets. He has an economy of 7.26.
