New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and lawyer Kapil Sibal is the latest to jump off the Congress ship.

Backed by the Samajwadi Party, he filed the nomination as an independent candidate for the Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Kapil Sibal said he had tendered his resignation from the Congress on May 16 itself.

According to sources, the resignation came after the party indicated that he would not get another Rajya Sabha term.

However, the party has not yet reacted to his move.

After filing his RS nomination, Sibal said it was not easy to leave a relationship of 30-31 years.

“I filled the nomination (for Rajya Sabha elections) as an independent candidate. I am thankful to SP chief Akhilesh Yadav that he supported me. I also wish to convey my gratitude to Azam Khan for the support that he has given me, not just now but over several years,” he said.

Meanwhile, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has said that Sibal is their first candidate. This means that the latter’s term in the Upper House of the Parliament is confirmed.
