Kapil Dev discharged from hospital after coronary angioplasty


World Cup-winning captain and a true cricket legend Kapil Dev was discharged from the hospital on Sunday. He was admitted to a Delhi-based private hospital on Friday with complaints of chest pain and had to undergo an emergency coronary angioplasty.

The treating hospital Fortis Escorts Heart Institute issued a statement in this regard. The hospital said: “Mr Kapil Dev got discharged today afternoon. He is doing fine and can resume his regular daily activity soon. He will be under regular follow-up consultation with Dr Atul Mathur.”

Angioplasty is a life-saving procedure to open blocked arteries and restore normal blood flow to the heart.

Former team India player and a friend of Kapil Dev, Chetan Sharma, also tweeted about the former Indian skipper’s discharge from Hospital. He wrote: “Good News Kapil Paji is absolutely fine & has been discharged from the hospital. Jai mata di.”

In an earlier statement issued by the hospital on Friday, it had said that Kapil Dev reached the hospital’s emergency department at around 1 am on Friday with a complaint of chest pain. He was evaluated by doctors and an emergency coronary angioplasty was performed on him by Dr Atul Mathur, who is the director of the hospital’s cardiology department.”

The hospital had clarified that Kapil Dev is in the intensive care unit (ICU) after the procedure, but in a stable condition. It had added that the former team India cricketer is expected to be discharged in a few days.

Wishes for good health pour in

After the news about Kapil Dev’s hospitalisation spread, several sporting personalities, including Indian skipper Virat Kohli, badminton star Saina Nehwal, former India opener Gautam Gambhir and well-renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle took to Twitter to wish him a speedy recovery.

Virat Kohli had said: “Praying for your speedy recovery. Get well soon paaji. @therealkapildev.”

Saina Nehwal had said: “Wishing u speedy recovery sir @therealkapildev.”

Gautam Gambhir had said: “Wishing @therealkapildev Good health & a speedy recovery. Take care sir!”

Harsha Bhogle had said: “Wishing the big-hearted, mighty Kapil Dev a speedy recovery. So much more to do.”

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor had said: “Concerned to learn that the legendary #KapilDev has suffered a heart attack & is in hospital. His mighty heart won many a battle for India. Wishing him the very best in winning this one too.”
