AMC brings proposal to give Vastrapur contract to firm involved in Kankaria Amusement Park ride collapse

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) does not believe in learning from experience it seems. How else can you explain the AMC bringing a proposal before the standing committee to award a contract for the Vastrapur Amusement Park to the same company whose ride collapse had led to death of two people and injury to 29 in Kankaria?

The Discovery Ride at the Kankaria Amusement Park had collapsed on July 14, 2019 killing two and injuring 29. Almost a year after the incident, the AMC has once again brought a proposal to award a contract to Super Amusement for rides at the amusement park in Vastrapur.

Super Amusement was the owner of the Discovery Ride that collapsed at Kankaria. A proposal to approve four big and 12 small rides at the Vastrapur lake to be given to Super Amusement under the PPP model has been put before the Standing Committee.

The proposal seeks to replace the three big rides with four new ones and 12 small ones. Super Amusement has the contract for the Vastrapur Lake Garden Amusement Park since the year 2012. It also has the contract for the Kankaria Amusement Park.

What inquiry said about Kankaria Amusement Park tragedy?

An inquiry into the July 14, 2019 accident of Discovery Ride had found that 11 of the operational 23 rides had some or the other defect. No action was taken against the company even after the findings of the inquiry and neither was it blacklisted.

Surprisingly, the AMC is once again keen on giving the contract to the same company whose lack of safety for its rides had resulted in the death of two people.
