Jyoti Kumari, who shot to international fame for cycling 1,200 km amid lockdown, loses father

Jyoti Kumari, the 15-year-old girl who cycled 1,200 km from Gurgaon to Bihar’s Darbhanga last year amid the COVID-19 induced lockdown, has lost her father to heart attack. The girl shot to fame for cycling with her injured father as pillion amid the scorching summer for seven days and went on to garner international attention on the plight of migrants during the COVID-19 lockdown in India.

Notably, the minor had gone to meet her father, Mohan Paswan, in Gurgaon after he met an accident that forced him to stay at home. Paswan used to work as an e-rickshaw driver.

However, due to the pandemic, the Centre imposed lockdown and extended it several times that forced the father-daughter duo to hit the road as they had no money left to sustain themselves in Gurgaon. In fact, their financial condition was so bad that they had to borrow to buy the cycle for the journey.

Paswan, driven to penury following the accident, had said his landlord gave him an ultimatum to either pay the rent that was due for a few months or leave.

“I succeeded in buying time on a couple of occasions. I promised him that I would take up whatever job I could land once the lockdown was lifted, earn money, and pay all his dues. We were so hard-pressed that I had to discontinue my medicines so that we could afford one square meal a day. How could we have arranged money for rent?” Paswan had then said.

Ivanka Trump praised Jyoti Kumari

Former US President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump described the feat of Jyoti Kumari cycling 1,200 km with her wounded father to get home under lockdown as a “beautiful feat of endurance and love”.

“15 yr old Jyoti Kumari, carried her wounded father to their home village on the back of her bicycle covering 1,200 km over 7 days. This beautiful feat of endurance & love has captured the imagination of the Indian people and the cycling federation,” Ivanka had tweeted.

For her feat, she has been awarded the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar and the Lok Janshakti Party had offered to sponsor her education.
