New Delhi: Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, who is set to retire on August 26, has recommended the name of Justice UU Lalit as his successor.
CJI Ramana handed over a copy of his letter of recommendation to Justice UU Lalit on Thursday.
The Secretariat of the CJI had received a communication on Wednesday from the Minister of Law and Justice requesting him to recommend the name of his successor, news agency ANI reported.
Justice Lalit will become the 49th CJI of India. However, his term will be short as he will remain in office till November 8 this year.
Justice Lalit was designated as senior advocate in SC in April 2004. In August 2014, he was elevated as an SC judge.
