Justice AS Dave of Gujarat High Court no more

The former acting chief justice and judge of the Gujarat High Court, AS Dave, on Monday left for heavenly abode. He was 63-years-old and had superannuated in September last year.

Sources said he was detected with cancer and was admitted to a private hospital off SG Highway where he was availing treatment. Notably, he was in the hospital for the past two weeks and was critical.

Illustrious career of 34 years

He has termed his life journey “a roller coaster ride” in his last interview just before hanging his boots. A man known for his simplicity and for being grounded, Justice AS Dave had an illustrious career of 34 years in the legal domain—19 years as a lawyer and 15 years as a judge of the Gujarat High Court.

Born in the tribal district of Panchmahals in 1957, he studied in a tribal village school. After completing his schooling, he graduated in commerce from Godhra and then studied LLB in Ahmedabad.

Justice AS Dave left govt jobs to become lawyer

Interestingly, not many people know that he was selected for various government jobs including in banks and the intelligence bureau of the government. However, he never joined them and instead chose to become a lawyer, following the footsteps of his brother Vimal Dave.

Justice Dave had also represented various government and non-government bodies in the high court. These include the Consumer Education and Research Centre, Sardar Sarovar Nigam Limited, GSIC, BSNL, etc.

Elevated as judge of Gujarat HC in 2004

He was elevated as a judge of the Gujarat High Court in 2004. He was made a permanent judge in 2006. Justice AS Dave was eventually elevated as the Acting Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court in November 2018 after a controversy erupted over the transfer of Justice Akil Kureshi as a puisne judge of the Bombay High Court.

He remained the ACJ till September 2019 when Justice Vikram Nath was appointed as the chief justice of Gujarat High Court.
