In a major blow to US President Donald Trump and his supporters who tried everything possible to block the transition of power, the Congress on Thursday formally certified Joe Biden as the next president. US lawmakers successfully defeated Republican efforts to deny Biden the electoral votes required to win.
The affirmation of Biden’s 306-232 victory over Trump in November essentially closes the door on the unparalleled and deeply controversial effort by Trump and his loyalists to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
Finally, Trump agrees to a peaceful transition
Meanwhile, outgoing US President Donald Trump has agreed to a peaceful transition of power.
He said, “Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless, there will be an orderly transition on January 20th. I have always said we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted.”
“While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it’s only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again!”
So far, Trump has vehemently opposed the US election result while also alleging voter fraud. He had earlier refused to cooperate to enable a smooth transition to the Biden administration.
Trump supporters storm US Capitol
The official declaration of Biden as the next president and Trump’s changed stance comes after an unprecedented assault on democracy in the US when a mob of thousands of supporters of Trump stormed the US Capitol and clashed with security forces.
The clashes resulted in four deaths, including a woman who was shot by a police officer, whereas three others died in medical emergencies, Washington DC Police chief Robert Contee said. Also, multiple officers were injured in the attack in their bid to control the errant mob.
Notably, the protesters breached security and entered the Capitol building where the members of the Congress were counting and certifying the Electoral College votes. The protestors were unhappy with the defeat of President Trump in the recently concluded presidential elections in which Joe Biden emerged as a winner.
