Jignesh Mevani, Kanhaiya Kumar likely to join Congress

Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani and Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) former student union leader Kanhaiya Kumar are likely to join the Congress, according to media reports.

Notably, their induction into the grand old party is scheduled on October 2—the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Earlier, the two leaders, with a significant following, were expected to join the party on September 28, but the event was pushed forward, NDTV reported citing sources. Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani is likely to be made a working president of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee.

While the induction of Mevani is a major boost for Congress’s Gujarat, Kanhaiya Kumar is likely to draw crowds, especially the youngsters, with his sharp attacks on the ruling dispensation. The student leader is also expected to bring a few other Left leaders to the Congress’ fold.

Jignesh Mevani praises Congress

On Monday, Jignesh Mevani took to Twitter to praise the Congress and party leader Rahul Gandhi for the selection of the new Punjab CM.

Jignesh Mevani tweeted, “The decision of appointing Charanjit Singh ji as the CM of Punjab is a message that @RahulGandhi and @INCIndia have given. It will have a tremendous impact amongst not just Dalits but all the subaltern masses. For Dalits, the move is not just brilliant but soothing too.”

Earlier, PAAS leader Hardik Patel too had joined the Congress, but he had often criticised the party for not providing him key responsibilities.
