  • Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra becomes first Indian ever to win an Olympic gold medal in athletics

Tokyo: The jinx is broken, thanks to the stunning Neeraj Chopra. The javelin thrower won for India its first gold medal at Tokyo Olympics on Saturday.
The win is special for more than one reasons. While it is the first gold this season, it is also the first gold medal in 13 years. It is also the first-ever gold medal for India in athletics.

Neeraj Chopra also became only the second Indian after Abhinav Bindra to win a gold medal in an individual event.

The young athlete’s debut run at Olympics has been stellar, to say the least. He had been leading throughout.
His phenomenal throw of 86.59 m in the first attempt during the qualification round was enough to put him at the top and thus qualify for the finals with a single throw.

Indian Army rejoices

Neeraj Chopra is a junior commissioned officer (JCO) in the Indian Army. Soon after his win, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted, “The Golden victory of Subedar Neeraj Chopra at the Olympic brings laurels for the Indian Army. He performed like a true soldier at the Olympics. It is indeed a historic and proud moment for the entire country including the Indian Armed Forces! Many congratulations to him!”

Earlier, the Haryana government had announced a cash prize of Rs 6 crore for the sportsperson from the state who would win gold in Tokyo. Neeraj is from Panipat district in Haryana and now eligible for that cash prize.

Social media went abuzz with congratulatory messages for the gold medallist.

Highest-ever medal tally for India at Olympics

With this gold medal, India’s medal tally at Tokyo Olympics has now reached seven, which is the highest ever at any Olympics. Earlier, Bajrang Punia’s bronze had made it equal to its previous best of six in the London 2012 Olympics.
