Malayalam film Jallikattu is India’s official entry for Oscars

Malayalam film Jallikattu has been selected by the Film Federation of India (FFI) jury as India’s official entry for the Best International Film category for the Oscars. The film has been directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery and is an action drama based on the short story Maoist by Hareesh.

The plot follows a bull that escapes from a slaughterhouse in a hilly remote village and the entire village men gathering to hunt down the animal.  The film stars Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad and Santhy Balachandran. It was released in Kerala on October 4, 2019.

Jallikattu earned critical acclaim

Jallikattu premiered on 6 September 2019 at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival and received widespread critical acclaim. The film was showcased at the 24th Busan International Film Festival under the section ‘A Window on Asian Cinema’. Lijo Jose Pellissery received Best Director trophy at the 50th International Film Festival of India.

Films releasing on OTT platforms allowed

With no theatrical releases due to the coronavirus pandemic, FFI had accepted nominations for films that were released on over the top (OTT) platforms. Jallikattu beat 26 contenders to become the official entry from India for the Academy Awards to be held next year.

The various contenders included Deepika Padukone-starrer Chhappak, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Shikara, Chaitanya Tamhane’s Venice International Film Festival-winner The Disciple, Rohena Gera’s Is Love Enough, Sir, Netflix releases such as Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, Bulbbul and Serious Men, Amazon Prime Video releases Shakuntala Devi, Chhlaang and Gulabo Sitabo for the honour.

Gully Boy selected last year

Filmmaker Rahul Rawail, who headed the FFI jury, said Jallikattu was the choice of the majority in the 14-member jury panel. Last year, the FFI jury headed by filmmaker and actor Aparna Sen had selected Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt

Meanwhile, actor Kangana Ranaut has congratulated Jallikattu’s team for its selection by FFI for Oscar.
