Gujarat University Pro vice-chancellor Jagdish Bhavsar has been appointed as the in-charge vice-chancellor of the University by the state education department. Bhavsar has been given the charge after the three-year term of the current Vice-Chancellor Himanshu Pandya came to an end.
The department said that the interim arrangement was being made until a new V-C is appointed by the Gujarat government. A three-member committee had been set up to look for a suitable candidate some months ago but the process to shortlist the candidate was yet to be completed. .
Immediately after the announcement was made, the student body of the Congress, the NSUI, opposed the appointment on the grounds that Bhavsar does not fulfill the required criteria set forth for the post. He was appointed as the pro V-C last February and now will continue to handle the functioning of the university as the chancellor until a new appointment is made.
The NSUI said that this was the BJP government’s attempt to ensure that Bhavsar got a smooth entry into the university. It alleged that earlier he was given an entry by being made the pro V-C and was now made the in-charge V-C. They alleged that it was only a matter of time before he was made the V-C of the university.
Bhavsar who has been a teacher himself has been with the BJP for the past 25 years. He has also served in various capacities in the AMC school board, secondary education board as well as in the university. Bhavsar is a PhD and has an MA degree in economics and history. He was a senate member of the university for over 20 years.
