The Iskcon Temple at SG Highway in the city will not be open for devotees this Janmashtami. Given the COVID-19 situation in the state and the government’s guidelines to avoid celebrations, the temple has decided that it will not be open for devotees this Janmashtami.
Iskcon Temple holds a grand celebration every Janmashtami. This year too the celebrations will be done with social distancing but sans devotees. The temple has, however, made arrangements to ensure that the live telecast of the event is available for devotees on youtube and Facebook page of the temple.
Celebrations at Iskcon temple
Media reports said that the temple will hold the Mangala Aarti at 4.30 am on Janmashtami while the shringar will be done at 7.30 am. The temple will also have a Krishnakatha and a Krishna mantra chanting from 9 am to 1 am the next day.
The Mahaabhieshek will be held at 11.30 pm while the aarti will be held at 12.30. The temple will be preparing over 400 delicacies to celebrate the occasion.
The temple spokesperson Hareshdasji was quoted by media as saying that it would be difficult to maintain social distance and hence they decided to close the temple for devotees on Janmashtami.
A special prayer to help the city and country overcome the COVID-19 pandemic will also be held on the occasion of Janmashtami at the Iskcon Temple.
Government cancels celebration
Earlier the Gujarat government had said that it would not allow for any large scale celebrations during Janmashtami or any other festivals that will fall in August.
It had said such celebrations could end up aggravating the COVID-19 situation. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Monday also appealed to the people to avoid going out during Janmashtami and instead restrict their celebrations at home.
The government has also said that a decision on Navratri will also be taken depending on the COVID-19 situation in the state.
