Iranian boat carrying heroin worth over Rs 150 cr seized off Gujarat coast

An Iranian boat carrying 30 kg of heroin worth over Rs 150 crore in the international market was apprehended by the Indian Coast Guard off the Gujarat coast in a joint operation with Gujarat Police’s Anti-terrorist Squad. Notably, the Gujarat coast has become a preferred route for the smuggling of drugs from Pakistan or Iran in the last few years.

There were intelligence inputs regarding the contraband being transported on the Iranian ship. Based on the inputs, the Indian agencies had intercepted it after it entered the Indian territorial waters. Seven crew members were aboard the boat. The crew, all Iranian nationals, have been apprehended and are being taken to the port in Gujarat for further investigation.

ATS DIG Himanshu Shukla said, “We had credible inputs from our intelligence sources about a big drug contraband on its way for delivery in mid-sea.”

“On an intelligence-based joint act, @IndianCoastGuard with ATS #Gujarat apprehended #Iranian boat in #Indian waters with 07 crew carrying #drugs. The boat is brought to the nearest port for further rummaging and investigations,” a defence PRO of Gujarat said on their official Twitter handle.

Heroin seized by DRI

Last week, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized two containers of narcotic substances worth over Rs 2,000 crore at Mundra port in Kutch district, believed to have originated from Afghanistan. DRI sources said that the containers, carrying heroin in 38 bags, were imported by a firm based in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh.

The firm had declared the consignment as “talcum powder”. The exporter firm has been identified as Hasan Hussain Ltd, based in Kandahar, Afghanistan. “The consignment has originated from Afghanistan and they were loaded at Bandar Abbas in Iran,” an official privy to the development had said.

Past incidents

In April this year, eight Pakistani nationals aboard a boat were apprehended with heroin worth around Rs 150 crore off the Gujarat coast in the Arabian Sea.

In January last year, five Pakistani nationals on board a fishing boat were apprehended mid-sea off the Gujarat coast while they were allegedly trying to smuggle drugs worth Rs 175 crore into the state. As many as 35 packets of heroin, each weighing 1 kg, were seized from the five men near the Jakhau coast in the Kutch district.
