Commercial international flights to and from India delayed over Omicron concerns

New Delhi: The Indian government has said that it will notify the new date for resumption of commercial international flights.

Earlier, it had been decided that these flights would be resumed from December 15.

However, with the emergence of the new variant of coronavirus, Omicron, the government has decided to defer the move.

In a statement, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said, “In view of the evolving global scenario with the emergence of new Variants of Concern, the situation is being watched closely in consultation with all stakeholders.”

It added that appropriate decision indicating the effective date of resumption of scheduled commercial international flights would be notified in due course.

 

More countries report Omicron cases

At least 20 countries in Europe have Omicron cases, according to reports

Brazil reported its first two cases in preliminary testing.

Among the countries that have recorded cases are Germany, Italy, Belgium, UK, Hong Kong, Australia, South Africa and a few other countries have already recorded cases of Omicron, according to reports.

Germany reported a case with no foreign travel history, indicating community transmission.

Four persons in southern Germany were infected despite being fully vaccinated, as per the public health office.

Several countries have started putting restrictions on commercial international flights in wake of the Omicron variant spread.
