Uttarakhand Congress leader Indira Hridayesh no more, PM Modi condoles death


Leader of Opposition in the Uttarakhand Assembly and senior Congress leader Indira Hridayesh on Sunday breathed her last after suffering a heart attack in New Delhi. The octogenarian died at the Uttarakhand Sadan in the national capital where she had gone to attend a party meeting, according to her son Sumit Hridayesh.

Notably, Indira Hridayesh was a legislator from Haldwani and one of the ace Congress leaders from the state. In April, she had tested positive for COVID-19 and had recovered from the viral infection. After her recovery, she had undergone a heart surgery. Her last rites are going to be held in her hometown in Haldwani tomorrow.

Condolences pour in

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi were among a host of leaders who paid their tribute to Indira Hridayesh.

PM Modi said, “Dr Indira Hridayesh Ji was at the forefront of several community service efforts. She made a mark as an effective legislator and also had rich administrative experience. Saddened by her demise. Condolences to her family and supporters. Om Shanti.”

Indira Hridayesh leaves behind a legacy of public service as an MLA, MLC, minister and leader of Opposition in Uttarakhand, Sonia Gandhi said, adding that “above all, she was a dedicated lifelong Congressperson”.

“She was particularly popular amongst her colleagues for her knowledge of legislative processes and procedure as also her performance as an able administrator. Her contribution to the Congress party will be treasured and cherished by all,” she added.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi also condoled the death of the veteran party leader. “Received the sad news about the demise of Dr Indira Hridayesh, a strong link of the Congress party in Uttarakhand. She worked till the end for public service and the Congress family. Her social and political contributions are an inspiration. Condolences to her loved ones,” Rahul Gandhi said.
