Pregnant woman delivers baby onboard Delhi-Bangalore IndiGo flight

A pregnant woman who was travelling from New Delhi to Bengaluru on Wednesday on an IndiGo flight delivered a baby boy enroute. IndiGo in a statement confirmed the incident that took place on Wednesday evening when the flight was on its way to Bengaluru.

The baby boy was born enroute on IndiGo’s Delhi-Bengaluru 6E 122 flight. “We confirm that a baby boy was delivered prematurely on Flight 6E 122 from Delhi to Bangalore,” IndiGo said in a statement.

Fellow passengers who were also traveling on the same flight later confirmed the news that a baby was born enroute on the Delhi-Bengaluru 6E 122 flight that landed at the Bengaluru airport around 7.30 PM.

They also shared pictures of the crew members holding the baby, which have now become viral on social media platforms. The IndiGo crew members are also being praised for helping the woman deliver the baby onboard the flight safely.

Lifetime free flights

Meanwhile, several social media users, as well as media reports, claimed that IndiGo might announce a lifetime free flight ticket for the child. However, there is no official statement made by the airline in this regard.

Grand welcome for mother and child

After the flight landed in Bangalore, the mother and the baby boy were given a grand welcome at the airport. IndiGo crew clapped and welcomed the mother and the newborn.

According to the statement, both mother and child are healthy. All the flight operations were normal during the process of delivery.

Questions raised over fit-to-fly certificate

Many social media users questioned the fit-to-travel certificate giver to the woman by her doctor. While many said the doctor should not have given a fit-to-fly certificate, others claimed that the baby was born premature.

Air travel norms for pregnant women

According to IndiGo, the following norms are applicable for pregnant woman:

Normal pregnancies:

Expectant mothers may be permitted to fly on IndiGo flights till the end of 36 weeks of pregnancy, provided there are no prior complications.

Fit to Fly certificate from the treating obstetrician, dated not more than 7 days before the date of travel, is required only if the pregnancy is between the 33rd and 36th week.

Multiple (twins, triplets etc.) pregnancies:

Expectant mothers may be permitted to fly on IndiGo flights only till the end of 32 weeks of pregnancy.

Fit to Fly certificate from the treating obstetrician, dated not more than 3 days before the date of travel, is required only if the pregnancy is between 28th & 32nd week.

Complicated pregnancies:

Expectant mothers shall not be allowed to travel beyond 32 weeks of pregnancy  in case of complicated pregnancy.

In addition, medical clearance is given by the company doctor who will discuss the case on an individual basis with the passenger’s doctor/or will check all the medical documents of the passenger (pregnant lady) in case treating obstetrician is not contactable.
