India’s daily surge in COVID-19 cases touches all-time high of 1.26 lakh


The health ministry on Thursday informed that over 1.26 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 1.29 crore.

It is the highest single-day surge in COVID-19 cases in India since the pandemic began in March 2020.

The ministry also informed that over 9.01 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 29 lakh people were vaccinated on Wednesday.

The second-biggest single-day surge of 1.15 lakh COVID-19 cases was reported in India on April 7, 2021. The third-highest surge of 1.03 lakh COVID-19 cases was recorded on April 5. It is followed by 95,570 cases reported on September 12.

Notably, India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

1.66 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 685 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 1,66,862.

Previously, the death toll had crossed the 1,200-mark on September 16.

1.18 crore patients recovered

Of the over 1.29 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 9.10 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 7.04 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 1.18 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 91.67 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March and April. Otherwise, there had been a gradual rise in the recovery rate.

Over 25.26 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 25.26 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 14.92 lakh samples were tested on September 24. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 14.23 lakh samples was tested on September 30. Over 12.37 lakh tests were carried out on April 7.

685 deaths in a day

Of the 685 deaths reported in a day, 322 deaths are from Maharashtra, 17 from Tamil Nadu and 35 from Karnataka. Eleven deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 40 deaths and West Bengal reported eight deaths. Gujarat reported 22 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 13 deaths. Delhi reported 20 deaths. Punjab reported 62 deaths.

One death has been registered from Odisha. Rajasthan reported 12 deaths, whereas Bihar reported three deaths. Six deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported seven deaths.

No fatality has been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported five deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported seven deaths. Puducherry reported one death and 16 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
