India’s COVID-19 deaths nearing 88,000

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday informed that 86,961 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally to 54.87 lakh.

So far, the biggest single-day surge of 97,894 COVID-19 cases was reported in India on September 17. The second-highest surge of 97,570 COVID-19 cases was recorded on September 12. It is followed by 96,551 cases reported on September 11.

Notably, India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

87,882 deaths due to coronavirus

Also, 1,130 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 87,882.

Notably, the daily death count due to COVID-19 has remained above 1,000 for the past many days. However, it dipped below the 900-mark on September 1. Previously, it had crossed the 1,200-mark on September 16.

Similarly, the case count has remained well past the 80,000-mark for the past few days. However, the biggest surge of over 97,894 cases was reported on September 17.

43.96 lakh patients recovered

Of the 54.87 lakh coronavirus cases reported so far, over 10.03 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is above 18 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, 43.96 lakh cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 80.12 per cent. In fact, the recovery rate marginally dipped for the first time on August 27 because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11 due to a rapid surge in cases.

Over 6 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 6 crore samples for COVID-19 has been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 12.06 lakh samples were tested on September 19. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 11.72 lakh samples was tested on September 2. Over 7.31 lakh samples were tested on September 20.

“In pursuance of the ‘test, track and treat’ strategy, India is geared up to reach the testing capacity of over 10 lakh tests per day,” the health ministry said.

1,130 deaths in a day

Of the 1,130 deaths reported in a day, 455 are from Maharashtra, 60 from Tamil Nadu and 101 from Karnataka. Fifty-seven deaths are from Andhra Pradesh, 61 from West Bengal and 94 from Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat has reported 17 deaths and Delhi 37 deaths, while Madhya Pradesh reported 27 deaths. Punjab has reported 56 deaths.

Ten deaths have been registered in Odisha, whereas three deaths were reported from Bihar. Nine deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in Telangana. Fourteen deaths have been reported from Rajasthan and 14 from Jammu and Kashmir.

Fourteen fatalities have been reported from Assam, 29 from Haryana and 13 from Uttarakhand. No deaths have been reported from Puducherry. Two deaths have been reported from Jharkhand and 16 from Kerala.
