India set to create vaccination record to commemorate PM Modi’s birthday

India administered over one crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines in a day by 1.30 pm on Friday and is on track to break all past vaccination records. The development comes as the Centre is desperate to set a new vaccination record on Friday to commemorate the 71st birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

By 2 pm, the number of COVID-19 vaccines crossed the 1.10 crore mark, according to the government’s CoWin portal. By 2.30 pm, it surpassed 1.23 crore.

On August 31, India administered over 1.30 crore doses—the highest single-day vaccinations so far. India achieved the one-crore doses milestone for the first time on August 27 this year.

The Union health ministry on Friday informed that over 77.24 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 63.97 lakh people were vaccinated on September 16.

BJP’s vaccine campaign

The vaccination campaign is key to the BJP’s three-week celebrations to mark the Prime Minister’s birthday. To achieve its target, the BJP had prepped health volunteers “to ensure that the maximum number of people get their COVID-19 vaccines on the day”.

“Let’s do #VaccineSeva and give him (PM Modi) birthday gift by getting vaccinated those who have not taken the dose so far,” Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya had tweeted yesterday, urging people to get the shots.

COVID-19 pandemic

The health ministry on Friday informed that 34,403 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 3.33 crore. India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

Also, 320 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 4,44,248. Previously, the death toll had touched 4,529-mark on May 19.

Of the over 3.33 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 3.39 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 1.02 per cent of the total caseload. Over 3.25 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.
