India reports over 77,000 COVID-19 cases in a day


The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Friday informed that 77,266 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally to 33.87 lakh.

It is the biggest single-day surge in COVID-19 cases in India followed by 75,760 cases reported on August 27.

61,529 deaths due to coronavirus

Also, 1,057 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 61,529. Notably, the daily death count due to COVID-19 has remained above 900 for the past many days. Previously, it had crossed the 1,000-mark on August 27.

Similarly, the case count has remained well past the 60,000-mark for the past few days. However, the biggest surge of over 77,000 cases was reported on August 28.

25.83 lakh patients recovered

Of the 33.87 lakh coronavirus cases reported so far, over 7.42 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is marginally less than 22 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, 25.83 lakh cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 76.28 per cent. In fact, the recovery rate marginally dipped for the first time on August 27 because of the surge in active cases.

Over 3.94 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 3.94 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 10.23 lakh samples were tested on August 21. Notably, it was the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 9.25 lakh samples was tested on August 24. Over 9.01 lakh samples were tested in India on August 27.

“In pursuance of the ‘test, track and treat’ strategy, India is geared up to reach the testing capacity of 10 lakh tests per day,” the health ministry said.

1,057 deaths in a day

Of the 1,057 deaths reported in a day, 355 are from Maharashtra, 109 from Tamil Nadu and 141 from Karnataka. Eighty-one deaths are from Andhra Pradesh, 55 from West Bengal and 90 from Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat has reported 17 deaths and Delhi 17 deaths, while Madhya Pradesh reported 24 deaths. Punjab has reported 37 deaths.

Seven deaths were registered in Odisha, whereas eight deaths were reported from Bihar. Eleven deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in Telangana. Thirteen deaths have been reported from Rajasthan and 14 from Jammu and Kashmir.

Four fatalities have been reported from Assam, 12 from Haryana and nine from Uttarakhand. Ten deaths have been reported from Puducherry. Eleven deaths have been reported from Jharkhand and 10 from Kerala.
