India reports 78,512 COVID-19 cases in a day


The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday informed that 78,512 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally to 36.21 lakh.

It is the biggest single-day surge in COVID-19 cases not just in India, but across the globe for the second consecutive day. The highest surge of over 78,761 cases was reported on August 30 followed by over 77,000 cases reported on August 28.

64,469 deaths due to coronavirus

Also, 971 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 64,469. Notably, the daily death count due to COVID-19 has remained above 900 for the past many days. Previously, it had crossed the 1,000-mark on August 28.

Similarly, the case count has remained well past the 60,000-mark for the past few days. However, the biggest surge of over 78,761 cases was reported on August 30.

27.74 lakh patients recovered

Of the 36.21 lakh coronavirus cases reported so far, over 7.81 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is marginally less than 22 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, 27.74 lakh cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 76.63 per cent. In fact, the recovery rate marginally dipped for the first time on August 27 because of the surge in active cases.

Over 4.23 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 4.23 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 10.23 lakh samples were tested on August 21. Notably, it was the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 9.28 lakh samples was tested on August 28. Over 8.46 lakh samples were tested on August 30.

“In pursuance of the ‘test, track and treat’ strategy, India is geared up to reach the testing capacity of 10 lakh tests per day,” the health ministry said.

971 deaths in a day

Of the 971 deaths reported in a day, 296 are from Maharashtra, 94 from Tamil Nadu and 106 from Karnataka. Eighty-eight deaths are from Andhra Pradesh, 50 from West Bengal and 67 from Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat has reported 17 deaths and Delhi 22 deaths, while Madhya Pradesh reported 29 deaths. Punjab has reported 56 deaths.

Twelve deaths were registered in Odisha, whereas 17 deaths were reported from Bihar. Nine deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in Telangana. Thirteen deaths have been reported from Rajasthan and nine from Jammu and Kashmir.

Seven fatalities have been reported from Assam, 12 from Haryana and seven from Uttarakhand. Ten deaths have been reported from Puducherry. Thirteen deaths have been reported from Jharkhand and seven from Kerala.
