India records nearly 85,000 COVID-19 deaths


The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Friday informed that 96,424 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally to 52.14 lakh.

So far, the biggest single-day surge of 97,894 COVID-19 cases was reported in India on September 17. The second-highest surge of 97,570 COVID-19 cases was recorded on September 12. It is followed by 96,551 cases reported on September 11.

Notably, India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

84,372 deaths due to coronavirus

Also, 1,174 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 84,372.

Notably, the daily death count due to COVID-19 has remained above 1,000 for the past many days. However, it dipped below the 900-mark on September 1. Previously, it had crossed the 1,200-mark on September 16.

Similarly, the case count has remained well past the 80,000-mark for the past few days. However, the biggest surge of over 97,894 cases was reported on September 17.

41.12 lakh patients recovered

Of the 52.14 lakh coronavirus cases reported so far, over 10.17 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is below 20 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, 41.12 lakh cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 78.86 per cent. In fact, the recovery rate marginally dipped for the first time on August 27 because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11 due to a rapid surge in cases.

Over 6.12 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 6.12 crore samples for COVID-19 has been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 11.72 lakh samples were tested on September 2. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 11.69 lakh samples was tested on September 3. Over 10.06 lakh samples were tested on September 17.

“In pursuance of the ‘test, track and treat’ strategy, India is geared up to reach the testing capacity of over 10 lakh tests per day,” the health ministry said.

1,174 deaths in a day

Of the 1,174 deaths reported in a day, 468 are from Maharashtra, 59 from Tamil Nadu and 93 from Karnataka. Seventy-two deaths are from Andhra Pradesh, 60 from West Bengal and 81 from Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat has reported 14 deaths and Delhi 38 deaths, while Madhya Pradesh reported 33 deaths. Punjab has reported 54 deaths.

Thirteen deaths have been registered in Odisha, whereas seven deaths were reported from Bihar. Eleven deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in Telangana. Fourteen deaths have been reported from Rajasthan and 19 from Jammu and Kashmir.

Seventeen fatalities have been reported from Assam, 24 from Haryana and 13 from Uttarakhand. Thirteen deaths have been reported from Puducherry. Eleven deaths have been reported from Jharkhand and nine from Kerala.
