India records nearly 1 lakh COVID-19 cases

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday informed that 95,735 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally to 44.65 lakh.

So far, it is the biggest single-day surge in COVID-19 cases reported in India. The second-highest surge of 90,802 COVID-19 cases was recorded on September 7. It is followed by 90,632 cases reported on September 6.

Notably, India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

75,062 deaths due to coronavirus

Also, 1,172 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. Interestingly, it is the highest single-day surge in coronavirus deaths. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 75,062.

Notably, the daily death count due to COVID-19 has remained above 1,000 for the past many days. However, it dipped below the 900-mark on September 1. Previously, it had crossed the 1,000-mark on September 9.

Similarly, the case count has remained well past the 80,000-mark for the past few days. However, the biggest surge of over 95,735 cases was reported on September 10.

34.71 lakh patients recovered

Of the 44.65 lakh coronavirus cases reported so far, over 9.19 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is less than 21 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, 34.71 lakh cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 77.74 per cent. In fact, the recovery rate marginally dipped for the first time on August 27 because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7 and 10.

Over 5.29 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 5.29 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 11.72 lakh samples were tested on September 2. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 11.69 lakh samples was tested on September 3. Over 11.54 lakh samples were tested on September 8. Over 11.29 lakh samples were tested on September 9.

“In pursuance of the ‘test, track and treat’ strategy, India is geared up to reach the testing capacity of over 10 lakh tests per day,” the health ministry said.

1,172 deaths in a day

Of the 1,172 deaths reported in a day, 380 are from Maharashtra, 65 from Tamil Nadu and 128 from Karnataka. Seventy-four deaths are from Andhra Pradesh, 53 from West Bengal and 65 from Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat has reported 16 deaths and Delhi 20 deaths, while Madhya Pradesh reported 31 deaths. Punjab has reported 71 deaths.

Eleven deaths have been registered in Odisha, whereas 10 deaths were reported from Bihar. Eleven deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in Telangana. Fourteen deaths have been reported from Rajasthan and 17 from Jammu and Kashmir.

Eighteen fatalities have been reported from Assam, 28 from Haryana and 12 from Uttarakhand. Ten deaths have been reported from Puducherry. Sixteen deaths have been reported from Jharkhand and 12 from Kerala.
