India records 90,632 COVID-19 cases in a day


The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday informed that 90,632 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally to 41.13 lakh.

It is the biggest single-day surge in COVID-19 cases in India since the pandemic began. The second-highest surge of over 86,432 cases was reported on September 5. It is followed by 83,883 cases reported on September 3.

70,626 deaths due to coronavirus

Also, 1,065 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 70,626. Notably, the daily death count due to COVID-19 has remained above 900 for the past many days. However, it dipped below the 900-mark on September 1. Previously, it had crossed the 1,000-mark on September 5.

Similarly, the case count has remained well past the 60,000-mark for the past few days. However, the biggest surge of over 83,883 cases was reported on September 3.

31.80 lakh patients recovered

Of the 41.13 lakh coronavirus cases reported so far, over 8.62 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is marginally less than 21 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, 31.80 lakh cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 77.32 per cent. In fact, the recovery rate marginally dipped for the first time on August 27 because of the surge in active cases.

Over 4.89 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 4.89 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 11.72 lakh samples were tested on September 2. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 11.69 lakh samples was tested on September 3. Over 10.92 lakh samples were tested on September 5.

“In pursuance of the ‘test, track and treat’ strategy, India is geared up to reach the testing capacity of 10 lakh tests per day,” the health ministry said.

1,065 deaths in a day

Of the 1,065 deaths reported in a day, 312 are from Maharashtra, 61 from Tamil Nadu and 128 from Karnataka. Seventy-one deaths are from Andhra Pradesh, 58 from West Bengal and 81 from Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat has reported 15 deaths and Delhi 25 deaths, while Madhya Pradesh reported 30 deaths. Punjab has reported 69 deaths.

Seven deaths have been registered in Odisha, whereas 34 deaths were reported from Bihar. Nine deaths have been reported due to COVID-19 in Telangana. Fourteen deaths have been reported from Rajasthan and 15 from Jammu and Kashmir.

Seven fatalities have been reported from Assam, 22 from Haryana and 18 from Uttarakhand. Eighteen deaths have been reported from Puducherry. Fifteen deaths have been reported from Jharkhand and 11 from Kerala.
