India records over 2.57 lakh new COVID cases


India recorded over 2.57 lakh new COVID cases in the last 24 hours and 4,194 fatalities during the same period. India’s total COVID cases now stand at 2.62 crores of which 29 lakh are currently active. This accounts for 11% of the total cases.

The total fatality due to the disease stands at 2,95,525. India has a recovery rate of 87.76%. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala are reporting some of the highest COVID cases while Maharashtra’s per day cases have dropped below 30,000.

Tamil Nadu will soon decide on whether to extend the lockdown while Karnataka, Goa, and Kerala have already extended it. In Karnataka lockdown has been extended till June 7 while Goa and Kerala extended it till May 31 & 30 respectively. Tamil Nadu’s lockdown will end on May 24.

Across the globe, over 16.58 crore people have been infected by the disease and the global fatality stands at 34.38 lakh.

COVID vaccination in India

Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has said that India will be in a position to vaccinate all of its adult population by the end of 2021. “Between August and December 2021, India will have procured 216 crore vaccine doses, while by July this year, 51 crore doses will be procured,” he said.

India has administered 19.33 crore COVID vaccine doses. Over 14.58 lakh COVID-19 vaccine doses were administered in India on May 21 which included 12.71 lakh first dose and 1.87 lakh second dose.

Meanwhile, Delhi said it will suspend the vaccination drive for the 18-44 age group in Delhi as its vaccine stock is about to get exhausted. Delhi said it has less than a day’s stock of Covaxin for the 45-plus age group.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will visit the United States from May 24 to 28 to meet top officials and vaccine manufacturers.
