India reaches per day vaccination target of 3 lakh, 14 lakh people covered so far

India has so far covered 14 lakh people under its COVID-vaccination drive. The country’s vaccination drive began on January 6. For the first time on Friday, India reached its set target of vaccination of over three lakh people per day, Union Health Ministry’s data showed.

The average number of vaccinations per day during the past week was 1,98,656. The total has touched 13,90,592. On Friday, the number touched 3,47,058.

India’s COVID vaccination drive uses Covishield and Covaxin. The former is developed by researchers at Oxford University in collaboration with AstraZeneca but is manufactured in India by Pune-based The Serum Institute of India.

Covaxin is produced by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech which created the vaccine in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Phase 1 of the drive, set to be completed by July, plans to vaccinate one crore health workers followed by 2 crore frontline workers.

The next phase will cover those aged above 50. All lawmakers will also get the jab in the second phase.

India has been sending vaccines to neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Seychelles, Mauritius, and the Maldives. It also began commercial shipments to Brazil and Morocco on Friday.

COVID in India

India recorded 14,256 new infections in the last 24 hours, according to the Union health ministry data. The country saw 152 deaths in the same period. This is the second consecutive day when the country has recorded less than 15,000 cases. The fatality has been under 200 for ten days now. The county has the second-highest number of cases at 10,639,684 Covid-19 cases.

The health ministry said there were 185,662 active COVID cases in the country and 10,300,838 people have recovered so far. The country has a recovery rate of 96.81%.
