India has recorded 12,193 new Covid-19 cases in last 24 hours, with the number of active cases of the infection going up to 67,556, the Union health ministry said on Saturday. The death toll due to the viral disease rose to 5,31,300 with 42 more fatalities, including 10 reconciled by Kerala, according to the ministry’s data updated at 8 am today.

Maharashtra records 993 Covid-19 Cases, 5 Deaths
Maharashtra on Friday reported 993 Covid-19 cases and five deaths, a health official said. A state health department bulletin said the XBB.1.16 is the dominant variant of Omicron that was driving the case surge in the state. So far, 681 cases caused by this variant have been detected, and five people have succumbed.
Karnataka Logs 537 Fresh Covid-19 Cases
Karnataka registered 537 fresh Covid cases in the past 24 hours, the state health department said on Saturday. As per official statistics, 15 persons have died in the last 15 days in the state. Sources in the health department said the situation is turning “serious” and people should follow Covid-appropriate behaviour. The number of active cases in the state stands at 2,027.
Gujarat registers 331 new cases
Gujarat recorded 331 new cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday. While 376 patients have recovered from the infection. Ahmedabad, was at the top in the tally with 100 cases, whereas Surat 52, Baroda 40, Mehsana 29, Patan 20, Gandhinagar 14, Valsad 11, Sabar Kantha 9, and Bharuch reported 8 new cases of Covid – 19. Currently, there are total 1997 active cases in the state, out of which 5 patients are being treated on ventilator
The active cases account for 0.15 per cent of the total caseload, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.66 per cent, according to the health ministry’s website.The tally of Covid cases has been recorded at 4,48,81,877. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease has gone up to 4,42,83,021, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.18 per cent.
Meanwhile, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan writes to Chief Secretary/Principal Secretary/Secretary (Health) of eight States/UTs (Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Rajasthan) on strengthening Covid surveillance.
