India COVID-19 tally inches close to 70 lakh cases


India recorded 73,272 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours while 926 fresh fatalities were reported due to the disease. The total death tally stands at 107,416 and the total cases are 69,79,424.

The number of active cases stood at 883,185 and 5,988,822 patients have recovered from the disease. For the second day in a row, the number of active coronavirus cases remained below 9 lakh.

As on October 9, the country has tested more than 8,57,98,600 samples of which 11,64,018 samples were tested on Friday.

COVID-19 in states

Maharashtra was the worst-affected state with over 15 lakh cases and 12,134 new cases. Its total now stands at 15,06,018.

This is followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

As of Friday evening, Karnataka recorded 6,90,269 cases and 9,789 deaths while in Andhra Pradesh the total COVID-19 figures stand at 7,44,864 including 47,665 active cases and 6,159 deaths.

Kerala on Friday reported 9,250 fresh corona cases taking the overall tally of those affected in the state to 2,66,100 while 25 deaths pushed the toll to 955.

The corona recovery rate is 85.52%.

Of the 926 new fatalities, 302 were from Maharashtra, 114 from Karnataka, 68 from Tamil Nadu, 62 from West Bengal, 48 from Uttar Pradesh, 39 from Delhi, 38 from Chhattisgarh, 32 from Punjab, 31 from Andhra Pradesh.

Of the total 1,07,416 deaths reported so far in the country 39,732 are from Maharashtra, followed by 10,120 from Tamil Nadu, 9,789 from Karnataka, 6,293 from Uttar Pradesh, 6,159 from Andhra Pradesh, 5,692 from Delhi.

The corona case fatality rate has dropped to 1.54%.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23 and 40 lakh on September 5. It went past 50 lakh on September 16 and crossed 60 lakh on September 28.

Across the word more than 36.6 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus and 1,062,428 have died. The United States continues to remain the worst-affected followed by India and Brazil.
