India records over 2.17 lakh COVID-19 cases, 1,185 deaths in a day


In a major cause of concern, the health ministry on Friday informed that over 2.17 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 1.42 crore. It is the highest single-day surge in cases since the pandemic began last year.

The ministry also informed that over 11.72 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 27.30 lakh people were vaccinated on Thursday.

Notably, the second-highest surge of over 2 lakh cases was reported in India on April 15. The third-highest surge of over 1.84 lakh cases was recorded on April 14, whereas the fourth-highest single-day surge of over 1.68 lakh COVID-19 cases was reported on April 12. It is followed by 1.61 lakh cases reported on April 13.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

1.74 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 1,185 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 1,74,308. It is the highest number of deaths reported in a day in the past six months.

Previously, the death toll had crossed the 1,200-mark on September 16.

1.25 crore patients recovered

Of the over 1.42 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 15.69 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 10.98 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 1.25 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 87.80 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March and April. Otherwise, there had been a gradual rise in the recovery rate.

Over 26.34 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 26.34 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 14.92 lakh samples were tested on September 24. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 14.73 lakh samples was tested on April 15, 2021.

1,185 deaths in a day

Of the 1,185 deaths reported in a day, 349 deaths are from Maharashtra, 29 from Tamil Nadu and 60 from Karnataka. Fourteen deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 104 deaths and West Bengal reported 22 deaths. Gujarat reported 81 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported four deaths. Delhi reported 112 deaths. Punjab reported 50 deaths.

Two deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 33 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 24 deaths. Four deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported nine deaths.

One fatality has been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported nine deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported 28 deaths. Puducherry reported one death and 20 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
