India’s daily surge in COVID-19 cases dips below 50,000 for the first time in 3 months


The health ministry on Tuesday informed that over 42,640 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 2.99 crore. It is the lowest single-day surge in cases in the past three months.

The ministry also informed that over 28.87 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 86.16 lakh people were vaccinated on Monday.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

3.89 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 1,167 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 3,89,302

Previously, the death toll had touched 4,529-mark on May 19.

Over 2.89 crore patients recovered

Of the over 2.99 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 6.62 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 2.21 per cent of the total caseload. Over 2.89 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 96.49 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May. However, the recovery rate has again started improving from May 10 onwards.

Over 39.40 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 39.40 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 22.17 lakh samples were tested on May 25. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 21.59 lakh samples was tested on June 2. Over 16.64 lakh samples were tested on June 21.

1,167 deaths in a day

Of the 1,167 deaths reported in a day, 352 deaths are from Maharashtra, 189 from Tamil Nadu and 142 from Karnataka. Forty-four deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 46 deaths and West Bengal reported 42 deaths. Gujarat reported two deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 19 deaths. Delhi reported eleven deaths. Punjab reported 28 deaths.

Forty-three deaths have been registered from Odisha, Rajasthan reported six deaths and Bihar reported seven deaths. Ten deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported nine deaths.

Thirty-five fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported nine deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported one death. Puducherry reported three deaths and 94 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
