India recorded 61,537 new cases of COVID-19 taking the total tally to 20,88,61 on Saturday. This is the ninth consecutive day that COVID-19 cases have increased by more than 50,000 in the country.
India is the third country in the world to cross 20 lakh coronavirus cases after the United States and Brazil. This is the fourth consecutive day that India has recorded more cases in a day than the United States or Brazil.
933 new deaths due to COVID-19 were recorded in the last 24 hours taking the total death toll due to the disease to 42,518.
At present, the country has 6,19,088 active cases of COVID-19 with a recovery rate of 67.62%. ICMR said 2,33,87,171 samples have been tested so far with 5,98,778 samples being tested in the last 24 hours alone.
The number of recovered patients exceeds active cases in the country by 7,32,835.
Close to 200 doctors have succumbed to COVID-19
The Indian Medical Association on Saturday sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention as more and more doctors succumb to the disease. IMA said 196 doctors have succumbed to the disease in the country so far.
“As per the latest data collected by the IMA, our nation has lost 196 doctors, out of which 170 of them are above the age of 50 years, with general practitioners accounting for 40% of the death,” the IMA. It also expressed concerns over the safety of doctors in the battle against the COVID-19 crisis.
Status of vaccine
Russia on Friday said it will register its first corona vaccine on August 12. Serum Institute of India (SII) on Friday said the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will provide $150 million in funding to manufacture 100 million doses of COVID-19 for India and other low-and-middle-income countries.
