India reports 50,848 fresh cases of COVID-19, tally crosses 3 crore


The health ministry on Wednesday informed that over 50,848 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 3 crore.

The ministry also informed that over 29.46 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 54.24 lakh people were vaccinated on Tuesday.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

3.90 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 1,358 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 3,90,660

Previously, the death toll had touched 4,529-mark on May 19.

Over 2.89 crore patients recovered

Of the over 3 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 6.43 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 2.14 per cent of the total caseload. Over 2.89 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 96.56 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May. However, the recovery rate has again started improving from May 10 onwards.

Over 39.59 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 39.59 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 22.17 lakh samples were tested on May 25. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 21.59 lakh samples was tested on June 2. Over 19.01 lakh samples were tested on June 22.

1,358 deaths in a day

Of the 1,358 deaths reported in a day, 482 deaths are from Maharashtra, 194 from Tamil Nadu and 141 from Karnataka. Fifty-three deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 58 deaths and West Bengal reported 47 deaths. Gujarat reported three deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 20 deaths. Delhi reported eight deaths. Punjab reported 34 deaths.

Thirty-eight deaths have been registered from Odisha, Rajasthan reported three deaths and Bihar reported six deaths. Seven deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 10 deaths.

Thirty-seven fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported eight deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported two deaths. Puducherry reported one death and 141 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
