India reports 44,111 new cases of Covid-19, 738 deaths


New Delhi: The active caseload of Covid-19 in India dropped below the figure of 5 lakh for the first time in 97 days, the health ministry has stated. The country reported 44,111 new cases of the infection in 24 hours ending Saturday morning. As many as 738 patients succumbed to the infection during this period.

On Friday, there were 46,617 cases. Currently, the country has 4,95,533 active cases. The case tally has reached 3,05,02,362 while the death toll stands at 4,01,050.

Meanwhile, the recovery rate has reached 97.06 per cent. A total of 57,477 recoveries were reported on Friday.

34.46 crore vaccine doses administered

Amid reports of shortage of vaccine, the ministry announced that over 34.46 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccine have been administered so far under the nation-wide vaccination drive as on July 3. Of these, over 43 lakh doses were administered in the last 24 hours, according to government data.

As many as 18,76,036 samples were tested for Covid-19 in 24 hours. So far, 41.64 crore samples have been tested, according to data released by ICMR.

Pregnant women can get vaccinated

In a press release on Friday, the government had announced that pregnant women would now be eligible for Covid-19 vaccination after the health ministry accepted the recommendations of NTAGI. Pregnant woment may either register on CoWIN or walk into the nearest Covid vaccination centre to get the vaccine.

“Based on current knowledge, experts believe that the Covid-19 vaccines are unlikely to pose a risk to the pregnant person or foetus,” the guidelines stated. However, long-term effects are yet to be established, they added.
