India records nearly 3 lakh COVID-19 cases, 2,023 deaths in a day

The health ministry on Wednesday informed that over 2.95 lakh fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 1.56 crore. It is the highest single-day surge in cases since the pandemic began last year.

The ministry also informed that over 13.01 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 29.90 lakh people were vaccinated on Tuesday.

Notably, the highest single-day surge of over 2.95 lakh cases was reported on April 21. The second-highest surge of 2.73 lakh cases was recorded on April 19. The third-highest surge of over 2.61 lakh cases was reported in India on April 18. The fourth-highest surge of over 2.59 lakh cases was recorded on April 20, whereas the fifth-highest single-day surge of over 2.34 lakh COVID-19 cases was reported on April 17.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

1.82 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 2,023 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 1,82,553. It is the highest number of deaths reported in a day since the pandemic began last year.

Previously, the death toll had touched 1,761-mark on April 20.

1.32 crore patients recovered

Of the over 1.56 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 21.57 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 13.82 per cent of the total caseload. Interestingly, over 1.32 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 85.01 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March and April. Otherwise, there had been a gradual rise in the recovery rate.

Over 27.10 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 27.10 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, 16.39 lakh samples were tested on April 20. Notably, it is the highest number of samples tested in a day. The second-highest number of over 15.66 lakh samples was tested on April 17.

2,023 deaths in a day

Of the 2,023 deaths reported in a day, 519 deaths are from Maharashtra, 48 from Tamil Nadu and 149 from Karnataka. Thirty-five deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported 162 deaths and West Bengal reported 46 deaths. Gujarat reported 121 deaths and Madhya Pradesh reported 77 deaths. Delhi reported 277 deaths. Punjab reported 60 deaths.

Five deaths have been registered from Odisha and Rajasthan reported 64 deaths, whereas Bihar reported 51 deaths. Eight deaths have been reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported 20 deaths.

Three fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand reported 27 deaths, whereas Jharkhand reported 45 deaths. Puducherry reported four deaths and 28 deaths have been registered in Kerala.
