India reports 27,254 COVID-19 cases, 219 deaths in a day

The health ministry on Monday informed that 27,254 fresh cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the past 24 hours. The addition of the fresh cases has taken the COVID-19 case tally past 3.32 crore.

The ministry also informed that over 74.38 crore COVID-19 jabs have been administered so far. Of it, over 53.38 lakh people were vaccinated on September 12.

India has already surpassed Brazil in terms of cases. It is now the second-worst hit nation due to the coronavirus pandemic after the US.

Over 4.42 lakh deaths due to COVID-19

Also, 219 COVID-19 related deaths were reported by the ministry during this period. The addition of the fresh fatalities has taken India’s death toll due to the deadly virus to 4,42,874. Previously, the death toll had touched 4,529-mark on May 19.

Over 3.24 crore patients recovered

Of the over 3.32 crore coronavirus cases reported so far, over 3.74 lakh are active cases of the virus. It is 1.13 per cent of the total caseload. Over 3.24 crore cases have recovered from the viral infection so far.

Thus, the country’s recovery rate stands at 97.54 per cent. The recovery rate had marginally dipped for the first time on August 27, 2020, because of the surge in active cases. It again dropped marginally on September 7, 10 and 11, and on November 25, 26 and 27 due to a surge in cases. It also dipped on February 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28 and is dipping throughout the month of March, April and May. The recovery rate started improving from May 10 onwards, but again started declining from August 25.

Over 54.30 crore samples tested

So far, as per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), over 54.30 crore samples for COVID-19 have been tested in the country. Of the total samples tested, over 22.29 lakh samples—the highest in a day—were tested on August 13. Over 22.17 lakh samples were tested on May 25. Notably, it was the second-highest number of samples tested in a day. The third-highest number of over 21.59 lakh samples was tested on June 2. Over 12.08 lakh tests were done on September 12.

219 deaths in a day

Of the 219 deaths reported in a day, 46 deaths are from Maharashtra, 22 from Tamil Nadu and 17 from Karnataka. Eleven deaths have been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh reported nine deaths and West Bengal reported 10 deaths. Delhi and Gujarat reported no death. Madhya Pradesh and Punjab reported no death.

Six deaths have been registered from Odisha while Bihar reported no death. Rajasthan reported no death. Two deaths were reported from Jammu and Kashmir and Telangana reported two deaths.

Eleven fatalities have been reported from Assam. Uttarakhand and Jharkhand reported no death. Puducherry reported two deaths while 67 deaths were registered in Kerala.
