Centre tells states/UTs to increase Covid-19 testing ‘immediately’ and ‘in strategic manner’

New Delhi: Taking cognizance of lower testing of Covid-19 in the country, the Centre has asked all states and Union Territories to increase it in a strategic manner.

The letter dated January 17 and signed by additional secretary, health, Arti Ahuja, read, “It is seen from the data available on the ICMR portal that testing has declined in many States and Union Territories.”

An earlier advisory on Covid-19 had emphasised that testing was the key strategy for Covid management as it helped with early detection of cases for quick isolation and care.

Identification of new clusters and hotspots of infection can facilitate immediate action for containment, which in turn can enable states to curb spread of the virus, Ahuja said.

Also, progression of Covid-19 to a severe category can be averted by strategic testing of those at higher risk or who are more vulnerable. Testing should also be done in areas where the spread is likely to be more, she added.

“In order to ensure that an effective track of the spread of the pandemic is kept and also immediate citizen centric action is initiated, it is incumbent upon all States/UTs to enhance testing,” Ahuja further said.

So far, over 70.54 crore samples have been tested for Covid-19 across the country. Of these, 16.49 lakh were tested in 24 hours ending Tuesday morning, as per the update from the health ministry.
