Social distancing and masks will be a must in the Rajya Sabha polls that are scheduled to be held on June 19. The Election Commission had declared that election to the 18 Rajya Sabha seats across the country will be held on June 19. Four of these seats are in Gujarat. It should be noted that two of BJP’s MLA are under treatment for COVID-19 as a result the machinery will have to put in place a system to ensure their voting too particularly if they continue to be in quarantine.
BJP has announced three candidates for the four seats while Congress has nominated two for the same number of seats. The elections and the counting will be held on the same day. Given the number of MLAs that the state assembly had when the BJP had come to power in the state, both the Congress and BJP could have won two seats each.
But the Saffron party managed to increase its number of MLAs from 99 to 103 by poaching from the Congress. Recently in March after the BJP declared its list of Rajya Sabha candidates, five MLAs of the Congress had resigned but are yet to join the BJP. The five MLAs were Pravin Maru from Gadhada, Pradyumansinh Jadeja from Abdasa, Soma Koli Patel from Limbdi, J V Kakadia from Dhari and Mangal Gavit from Dang,
It is expected that they will join the party in the coming days before the Rajya Sabha polls.
The fight will be among the BJP’s three candidates of BJP- Abhay Bhardwaj, Ramil Bara and Narhari Amin, the latter had left the Congress for the BJP – and Congress’ candidates Bharatsinh Solanki and Shaktisinh Gohil. The Rajya Sabha elections were necessitated after the end of term of four Rajya Sabha members — Chunibhai Gohel, Shambhuprasad Tundiya and Lalsinh Vadodia from BJP and Madhusudan Mistry from Congress.
