In what could be a major blow for the Gujarat Congress that is already in poor shape ahead of the local body elections, Congress MLA from Jamalpur-Khadia, Imran Khedawala, has tendered his resignation from the party.
The Congress legislator was reportedly unhappy with the party leadership for ignoring local youngsters in the distribution of tickets for Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation elections.
Earlier, Khedawala had met Gujarat Congress chief Amit Chavda and tendered his resignation. Notably, Khedawala had urged the party leadership to provide ticket to Kamruddin Pathan and Nazmaben for the Behrampura ward under Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. However, the party rejected his request and gave tickets to other candidates for the local body polls.
Imran Khedawala’s political career
Imran Khedawala was with the Congress since 2001. However, in 2015, the Congress denied him a ticket in the AMC elections. He contested the election as an independent candidate and won from the Jamalpur ward.
In 2017, Congress fielded Khedawala as its candidate in Assembly election. He defeated BJP candidate Bhushan Bhatt, son of former Gujarat Cabinet minister and Speaker Ashok Bhatt.
Congress in poor shape
Gujarat Congress is already in poor shape with many leaders unhappy with the functioning of the party. Many Congress legislators in the recent past have dumped the party to join the BJP.
Amid all this, the entry of Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM has further created trouble for the Congress. Notably, the entry of AIMIM is likely to result in a division of Muslim votes, which would make it more difficult for the Congress to win elections even from the Muslim-dominated areas of the city.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi during his rally at Ahmedabad on Sunday heavily criticised Congress saying there is no future for the party. It also lambasted the party for its failure to safeguard the rights of Muslims.
