A faculty member of the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) Vimal Mishra has been selected for the 2021 American Geophysical Union (AGU) Devendra Lal Memorial Medal.
Mishra, an associate professor of Civil Engineering at the institute, Mishra has been chosen for the medal for his research and contributions in Earth sciences. He will also become an AGU Fellow and a lifetime member of the union.
The professor will receive the award during the AGU 2021 Fall Meeting to be held from December 13 to 17 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He will also be invited to present a lecture at the event, a statement from the institute reads.
Mishra’s research focuses on surface water hydrology, climate variability and climate change, global food and water security, water resources management, and large-scale hydrologic modelling. He has contributed to developing real-time monitoring and prediction systems of droughts and floods in India.

Reacting to the development, Vimal Mishra said, “I am deeply humbled and honoured to be named as a recipient of the Devendra Lal Memorial Medal. I express my gratitude to the AGU Honors and Recognition Committee, the selection committees, nominators, and nomination supporters for this recognition of my work.”
He added, “I also take this opportunity to thank my colleagues, mentors, students, collaborators, and my lovely family for their consistent support and encouragement.”
The Devendra Lal Memorial Medal is awarded annually to an early- or mid-career scientist in recognition of outstanding research in Earth and/or space sciences by a scientist belonging to and working in a developing country.
