New Delhi: A mix-and-match of Covishield and Covaxin, the two Covid vaccines available in India, can have better results than having two doses of the same vaccine, a study by the Indian Council of Medical Research has said.
According to the study, administering a vaccine with adenovirus vector platform base and then following it up with an inactivated whole virus vaccine elicited better immunogenicity.
The combination was also found to be safe, the ICMR study stated.
The study was titled ‘Serendipitous Covid-19 Vaccine-Mix in Uttar Pradesh, India: Safety and Immunogenicity assessment of a heterologous regime’.
There have been multiple debates over which vaccine, Covishield or Cavaxin, is more effective in keeping Covid at bay.
Covishield is an adenovirus vector platform-based vaccine, while Covaxin is inactivated whole virion.
For the study, ICMR researchers administered one dose of each vaccine to 18 individuals, while 40 each got both doses of the same vaccine. The study was conducted in May-June 2021.
The researchers compared the safety and immunogenicity profile of the 18 individuals with that of the other two groups that had received two doses of the same vaccine.
The results could help improve the vaccination programme in the country.
