T20 World Cup is postponed by ICC amid pandemic


The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday finally announced that ICC postpones T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in Australia in October-November due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. There were several speculations doing the round that the board would eventually postpone the tournament   (ICC postpones T20 World Cup)this year considering the COVID-19 situation around the world and the practical difficulties in organising such a grand event.

ICC on Monday conducted a meeting, via video conference, with all the other cricketing boards to take a call regarding the future of this year’s biggest cricketing event in men’s cricket.

With the virus spreading to all parts of the world, hosting such a big event would have surely been a huge task for all involved. Hence, in order to curtail the risk involved, the ICC went ahead with postponing the ICC tournament.

Earlier, Earl Eddings, chairman, CA had been quoted as saying to the local reporters in June, 2020, “While it hasn’t been formally called off or postponed, trying to get 16 countries into Australia in the current world, where most countries are still going through COVID spiking, I think it’s unrealistic.”

The Men’s T20 World Cup was scheduled to take place in Australia from October-November. In addition, the final match was to be played at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on November 15, 2020.

At Monday’s meeting of the IBC Board (the commercial subsidiary of the ICC), windows for the upcoming three ICC men’s events were also agreed upon.
