Bengaluru: Group Captain Varun Singh of the Indian Air Force, the lone survivor of the IAF helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu, succumbed to his injuries after battling for life for one week.

The IAF chopper was carrying Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat, his wife and senior Defence personnel to Wellington. Rawat and 12 others were killed in the crash.

However, Varun Singh survived with critical injuries.

He was shifted to Command Hospital in Bengaluru for better treatment last Thursday.

Despite the best of efforts, he could not be saved.

“IAF is deeply saddened to inform the passing away of braveheart Group Captain Varun Singh, who succumbed this morning to the injuries sustained in the helicopter accident on 08 Dec 21. IAF offers sincere condolences and stands firmly with the bereaved family,” the IAF tweeted.

Reacting to his death, PM Narendra Modi tweeted, “Group Captain Varun Singh served the nation with pride, valour and utmost professionalism. I am extremely anguished by his passing away. His rich service to the nation will never be forgotten. Condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti.”
