IAF jawan arrested in Delhi on espionage charges

  • Police believe that the accused, Devendra Sharma, may have been honey-trapped

New Delhi: The Delhi police arrested a jawan of the Indian Air Force for allegedly leaking sensitive information. The jawan has been identified as Devendra Sharma. The police believe he was a victim of a honey trap and suspect that Pakistan’s Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) may be behind the trap.

In a statement, the police said, “We received a complaint from IAF stating that Sharma had leaked information about defence installations after deceitfully getting the information from computers. He allegedly leaked information to an agent of an adversary country and also received money for the same.”

Police said Sharma, a native of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh, had befriended a woman on Facebook. She allegedly called him frequently to get information related to the IAF. They added that they had notice suspicious transactions in his wife’s bank account.

Sharma was arrested by Delhi police from Dhaula Kuan area on May 6. A case has been registered against Sharma under the Official Secrets Act. If he is found guilty, he will have to face punishment despite the act being unintentional.

Currently, he is in the custody of the crime branch where police will ascertain the extent of information shared by him.
