The early morning search and seizure operations on the house and offices of Popular Builders and Raman Patel on Thursday have led to the seizure of several incriminating documents.
The department on Thursday searched 25 different places in the city and one of them was Raman Patel of Popular Builders. The search operations were carried out at the office and house of Raman Patel.
As per reports, the team recovered several bags of documents and sale deeds from the house of a person associated with Popular Builders. The documents sources said to point out to Popular Builders having over 100 different companies and officials are also searching 14 bank lockers.
Sources said the officers and houses of Dashrath Patel and Virendra Patel who are also part of the Popular Builders group were also raided.
Sources in the know said the department had zeroed in on Popular Builders after Raman Patel allegedly sent Rs2.5 crore to his daughter-in-law Fizu.
But since the government had put a stop to search operations during the pandemic the I-T department could not do much. The search came on Thursday after the government lifted the ban on search operations as part of Unlock.
Search operations in PPE kits at Popular Builders
The Income Tax officials wore PPE kits at the time of search operations as a precautionary measure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Income Tax officials suspect that Popular Builders have several alleged Benami properties. The officials are still investigating the matter.
Officials said documents also point out to large scale tax theft by the group. Apart from Ahmedabad searches were also carried out in Rajkot and Surat.
In August, Fizu Patel, the daughter-in-law of Raman Patel of Popular Builders accused her in-laws of forcefully kidnapping her and forcing her to sign an application favouring them. Fizu Patel had filed a case against builder Raman Patel, his wife Mayurika, son Maunang and Mukesh.
Before the complaint was filed cops had in a raid recovered Rs2.5 crore from the house of Fizu’s aunt.
Raman Patel and Fizu’s husband Maunang had been on the run since the recovery of Rs2.5 crore. They were later nabbed by the police.
