The Income Tax Department and the Surat Police have carried out search operations at the residence of Surat city BJP vice-president PVS Sharma.

Sharma resides in Piplod area. PV Sharma had on Tuesday alleged that Kalamandir Jewellers had evaded tax worth crores of rupees during the demonetisation and that he has proof of the same.

Sharma had tweeted seeking an ED and CBI inquiry into the matter and tagged both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

What had PV Sharma, the BJP leader, tweeted

The tweet had alleged that several corrupt Income Tax officers, chartered accountants and industrialists had come together to avoid paying tax on unaccounted money.

The BJP leader had said that during demonetisation, one big jewellery business had deposited Rs110 crore in the bank in three days but paid only Rs84 lakh as tax.

He had claimed that he had proof of the same. It is suspected that the search operations were a result of these claims. Sharma is also being questioned.

Sharma, who himself is a retired income tax official had tweeted several documents concerning Kalamandir Jewellers near Surat’s Ghoddod Road and had sought a probe into the alleged tax theft by ED.

He had alleged that Kalamandir Jewellers owner had Rs110 crore in cash with him. On November 8, 2016 night when demonetisation came into effect, banks were closed.

On November 10, 2016, when the banks opened the jewellers deposited Rs 92.80 cr, on November 11, Rs10 crore was deposited and on November 12, Rs7.19 cr was deposited. Thus, in all the jewellers deposited Rs109.99 cr.

The jewellers had paid mere Rs84 lakh as income tax in the year 2016-17.

Sharma said how can Rs110 cr of deposit attract just Rs84 lakh of income tax and this was a matter of investigation.
He alleged that the jewellers were closely associated with an NCP leader.
