Hyderabad rape and murder accused found dead on railway track after minister’s “encounter” threat

A man accused of rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in Hyderabad has been found dead on railway tracks on Thursday morning. The accused was trying to run away when he jumped in front of a train, the police said.

Earlier, a photo of the accused Pallakonda Raju was released by the police along with a reward of Rs 10 lakh. Notably, the accused was a neighbour of the victim.

The development comes within two days of a Telangana minister warning about an “encounter”. On Tuesday, Telangana Minister Malla Reddy had said, “We will catch the rapist and murderer. There will be an encounter after he is caught.”

The Telangana Police has confirmed the development on Twitter. The director general of police said, “#AttentionPlease: The accused of “Child Sexual Molestation and murder @ Singareni Colony, found dead on the railway track, in the limits of #StationGhanpurPoliceStation. Declared after the verification of identification marks on the deceased body.”

Ministers meet victim’s family

Telangana ministers Mohammed Mahmood Ali and Satyavathi Rathod met the parents of the six-year-old girl on Thursday. They offered the family a cheque for Rs 20 lakh as ex-gratia. The ministers also assured support and help from the Telangana government.

Home minister Ali on Wednesday asked police officials to take steps to apprehend the accused in the case as soon as possible and take further measures as per law, even as the opposition Congress, BJP and others stepped up attacks on the TRS government over the incident.

The incident rape

The girl went missing from her home in Singareni Colony in Hyderabad on September 9.  Her body was found in the house of the neighbour the next day, wrapped in a bedsheet. An autopsy confirmed that she was sexually assaulted and strangled.

Initial reports had said the accused had been arrested. But when it emerged that the information was false, there were massive protests and tension in the area, with residents of the colony demanding justice for the girl and her family. Some even demanded “an encounter”
